Size Matters

“How large of a tablecloth should I buy?” is a question I’m asked a lot. Since fall is a busy season for entertaining, many of you might be wondering the same thing.

So here’s a tip: look for a tablecloth that is 16″ to 20″ wider than your table and 16″ to 20″ longer than your table. If you have a dining table that is 44″ X 60″, for example, then the perfect size cloth would be 63″ X 79″. However, table linen manufacturers don’t always make cloths in every size imaginable, so use the above range as a guide. Just remember that you never want the “drop” to be too short or too long.

You might need to have tablecloths in several lengths if you sometimes use a leaf with your table. If you can’t find the perfect size, you can always get a custom size. Many manufacturers offer custom sizes, so just ask.

We had a new ‘customer’ in the shop today. I heard this rattling noise and went to investigate. I found a squirrel with a big walnut in its mouth scampering around. I had figured that it was only a matter of time before one decided to scope out the shop since they are forever finding their way to the front porch.

I thought surely that he had come in to see the darling squirrel plates from Gien or the charming squirrel salt and pepper shakers. Or maybe it was for the placecard vases filled with acorns! Apparantly, he has to think about it because he left without a single purchase, but at least he didn’t break anything! And that reminds me of the time we had a bat in the Edmonds’ store — but that’s another story.

Rediscovery

I just received a new packet of paint colors from Sherwin-Williams called Rediscovery. It consists of four collections of color groupings: Rooted, Simplified, Treasured, and Refreshing. The company says that “the past transforms the present in fresh colors that simplify a complex world.” While I really have no idea what that actually means, the colors themselves are nice — very vibrant with a lot of dark hues. Mellow Yellow

Since yellow blends with so many of this fall’s popular colors, it’s a natural choice for a wall color. Picking a great wall color can be so stressful, and trying to find the right shade of yellow is really difficult.

So here’s a tip! Avoid yellows that are too bright or too pastel. When the paint dries, these colors rarely look right. Instead, pick a shade that has more of a gold base like straw. It’s warm, inviting, and comfortable color. You’ll love it!
